Home inventory

List what you own, room by room. Kept on your device.

After a fire, a break-in or a burst pipe, you are asked to list everything that was lost, from memory. An inventory made now makes that claim faster and helps you set the right contents limit. Nothing here is uploaded.

Nothing listed in this room yet. Start with the most expensive things, then work around the room clockwise.

Making an inventory that holds up

Walk each room once with your phone and record a slow video, opening cupboards and closets as you go. Then list the items you would struggle to describe from memory: electronics with model numbers, furniture, anything bought in the last few years, and anything you inherited or collected.

The figure to note is what it would cost to buy the same thing new today, not what you paid. Whether a claim pays that amount or a depreciated one depends on your policy wording, so ask your broker whether your contents are on a replacement cost basis.

Update the list when you buy something significant, and look it over at each renewal. If the total has grown well past your contents limit, that is the conversation to have with your broker.
