Vehicle lookup

What is your vehicle, really? And has it been recalled?

Enter a VIN to see the exact model, its safety equipment, its crash-test rating and every recall Transport Canada lists for it. Free, from government data, and your full VIN never leaves this device.

0 of 17 · On your registration, your insurance pink card, or the dashboard where it meets the windshield on the driver's side.

No VIN to hand? Use the year, make and model

What stays on your device

A VIN has three parts. The first eight characters describe the model, the ninth is a check digit, and the tenth and eleventh give the year and the plant. The last six identify your car alone. To decode it, this page sends only characters one to eight, ten and eleven to the U.S. government's free decoder, so it learns the model but not the car. Recalls are fetched by year, make and model. Nothing is saved unless you choose to save it to your request, and even then the VIN is not included; a broker asks for it when they quote.

Why a broker cares

The exact trim, body, drive and powertrain change how a vehicle is rated, and so can its safety equipment. An unrepaired safety recall is worth fixing for its own sake. Saving the lookup to your request gives a licensed broker the details without retyping them.
